HTF4UK is a campaign advocating for the establishment of a Human Taphonomy Facility in the United Kingdom. We are committed to handling any personal information you share with us responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights in relation to it.

HTF4UK is a campaign initiative led by academic researchers and forensic science professionals. For data protection purposes, the data controller is:

2. What Information We Collect

Contact form submissions

If you use our contact form to get in touch with us, we collect:

  • Your name

  • Your email address

  • Any other information you choose to include in your message

Public opinion survey

We run an anonymous survey to gather public attitudes towards human taphonomy research and the establishment of a UK facility. This survey is designed so that:

  • No personally identifying information is required to complete it

  • Responses cannot be traced back to any individual

  • IP addresses are not recorded or stored alongside survey responses

If you voluntarily provide contact details at the end of the survey (for example, to receive updates), those details are collected and handled in the same way as contact form submissions, as described above.

Website usage data

Like most websites, we may collect basic technical data such as browser type, pages visited, and time spent on the site. This is used solely to understand how the site is being used and to improve it. This data is not linked to any individual.

 

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information you provide through the contact form to:

  • Respond to your enquiry or message

  • Keep you informed about the campaign if you have requested updates

  • Follow up on expressions of interest in body donation, volunteering, or supporting the campaign

We use aggregated, anonymised survey data to:

  • Understand public awareness and attitudes towards human taphonomy research

  • Inform our advocacy work and policy discussions

  • Publish findings that support the case for a UK facility

We will never use your information for marketing unrelated to HTF4UK, and we will never sell or share your data with third parties for commercial purposes.

  • Legitimate interests - responding to your enquiry and pursuing the campaign's advocacy objectives

  • Consent - where you have explicitly opted in to receive updates or further communications

5. How Long We Keep Your Data

We retain contact form data only for as long as is necessary to respond to your enquiry and maintain a record of correspondence. We do not retain personal data beyond two years unless you have an ongoing relationship with the campaign.

Anonymised survey data may be retained indefinitely, as it contains no personal information and forms part of the research record.

 

6. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. We may share your information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • With other members of the HTF4UK academic team, where necessary to respond to your enquiry

  • Where required by law or a regulatory authority

Any third-party tools or platforms used to host the website or survey are chosen carefully and are required to meet appropriate data protection standards.

 

7. Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you

  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data

  • Request deletion of your data, where there is no legitimate reason for us to retain it

  • Object to processing or request that we restrict how we use your data

  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent

If you are not satisfied with how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

We take reasonable steps to protect any personal data we hold from unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Contact form submissions are handled securely and access is restricted to the campaign team.

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
